Using this Directory

There are two kinds of searches available, depending on your needs:

• Language Search

• Name Search

Language Search

Start by choosing the language pair of your document or assignment (for interpretation). Only language pairs for which there are NOTIS members are listed here. If you don't know what language your text is in, these links may help. You may also specify an area of specialization. Press the search button to display a table of all translators and interpreters that meet your specified criteria. To make your choice easier, the table includes notations regarding both the geographic location and specialization in other subject matters. The following symbols appear in each table:

	business & marketing	The translator/interpreter specializes in or is comfortable with materials and situations relating to business, marketing, and/or economics.
	computers	The translator specializes in or is comfortable with translation of materials relating to computer software and/or hardware.
	legal	The translator/interpreter specializes in or is comfortable with legal materials and situations.
	literary	The translator specializes in or is comfortable with literary materials.
	medical	The translator/interpreter specializes in or is comfortable with medical subjects.
	sci-tech	The translator/interpreter specializes in or is comfortable with scientific and technical materials and situations.
	social services	The translator/interpreter specializes in or is comfortable with social services materials and situations.

The symbols to the right of the member’s name graphically indicate the individual's specialty areas. The key to these symbols appears above.

The languages listed under Source Target indicate the language pairs this member works in.

A member's most fluent language can be a determining factor in considering employment. This language is the language which a person writes and/or speaks with the greatest ease and confidence. In most cases, it is the same as the native language.

Educational background, as reported by the member, is listed under the heading Education.

Certification programs differ from state to state and from country to country. ATA certification is not available in many language pairs, and many of our members were trained abroad. Certification, as reported by individual members, is listed under Certification.

Membership in professional organizations is listed under Memberships. This may include organizations reflecting the member's linguistic skills, as well as areas of specialization. Acronyms used in the members’ listings are expanded here.

Any experience the member can bring to his or her translation or interpretation activities is noted in Special experience. This might include hobbies or work experience.

Some translators and interpreters offer services not directly related to the specific activities of translation and interpretation. These are listed under Other services.

Language Guessers

All of these sites work on the same idea: feed it a sentence, and it will try to identify the language based on an algorithm.

LangWitch
Demo of a commercial language identifier from MorphoLogic.

Stochastic Language Identifier
This system won a language identification "bake-off" within a statistical natural language processing course taken by the author in early 1996. Free source code (TAR file).

TextCat Language Guesser
A free demonstration language guesser, scripted in PERL. You can download the source to include in your own application.

Eidetica
A commercial guesser that recognizes typical letter combinations of about 70 languages.
