    Computational Linguistics & Language Engineering
    A listing of sites dealing with the more academic aspects of Machine Translation, especially linguistics.

    Across
    Scalable translation support software. They offer a free trial of the personal version.

    Alchemy Catalyst
    Version 5.0 of this localization tool is now available, with a free trial version available for download. They also offer a "lite" version for single translators.

    Crystal Translator
    For localization of reports generated by Crystal Reports with built-in TM. Handles mirroring, page size localization, font replacement, truncated texts detection and more.

    Déjà Vu
    Low-cost MT system.

    Eurolang® Optimizer
    Sentence-based TM system.

    ForeignDesk
    A Linux-based integrated translation environment with a public license.

    Foreignword.com
    Provides a comprehensive list of many MT products, including many language-specific for languages of limited diffusion.

    Machine Translation: An Introductory Guide

    MonoConc for Windows
    Concordance program for Windows.

    OmegaT
    OmegaT is a free translation memory application written in Java (which means it should run on any platform which supports the Java Runtime Environment).

    RC-WinTrans
    Localization tool from Schaudin.com, formerly IBS Software.

    TM Systems
    Localization software for film and television industry specialists, allowing for digital closed captioning translation to be done on a Windows machine. Other products in their family are designed to facilitate dubbing and subtitling.

    TRADOS
    Translation tools, including Translator's Workbench, TagEditor, MultiTerm, WinAlign, the S-Taggers, and T-Window for PowerPoint, all in one package.

    Translation Memory eXchange
    The purpose of TMX is to allow easier exchange of translation memory data between tools and/or translation vendors with little or no loss of critical data during the process. Here's the scoop on it.

    Translation Research Group
    Affiliated with Brigham Young University, this organization provides information about language theory and language technology, particularly relating to translation.

    SDLS Interactive Translation System
    A TM system supporting TMX and many other standards.

    STAR Transit
    Computer-assisted translation and terminology software, featuring STAR Transit and TermStar.

    Visual Localize
    A .net-based software localization tool.

    Wordfast
    A shareware translation memory engine using a Microsoft Word template for both PC and MAC. It also terminology and typography control. Direct compatibility is maintained with Trados 2, 3 & 5, TMX and Translation Manager TM's. Registration includes +Tools. Wordfast Office and access to the Wordfast Very Large Translation Memory Project.

    World Language Resources
    More international software, featuring their own World Translator CD. They offer a free 60 page International Software Buyer's Guide.

    Word Translator for Windows
    Translation Experts Ltd. is providing demos of its update to the Speaking Edition of their Word Translator software.

    Terminology Management

    DicoMaker
    Shareware terminology management software tool for translators. DicoMaker dictionaries are text files, not database files. Page also includes links to some content (glossaries) and Microsoft Word macros.

    Lingo
    Terminology software with a free download of the trial version.

    Terminology Extractor
    Extract terms from documents, with statistics on frequencies and sorting, even from multiple documents.

    Terminotix LogiTerm
    From a company specializing in the translation industry, LogiTerm is a terminology tool. They also offer automatic text analysis and retrieval tools.

    UniTerm
    A German-interfaced terminology management system.

    XTS
    Newly acquired from Xerox, Temis' software suite helps you create your corporate terminology and to improve consistency and quality of documents.

    Macro add-ons for Word, Excel and PowerPoint that generate an accurate word count and calculate a price.

    AvantPage
    Foreign prepress services (you do the translating, they do the typesetting).

    Euroab
    Freeware Euro currency converter.

    Free Budget
    Freeware budgeting software for translators, from a company specializing in word count utilities.

    Instant Text
    A word processor add-on intended for transcriptionists, but useful for anyone who types a lot of repetitive text. A clone of the functionality of AutoText in Microsoft Word, but it also adds functions such as compiling glossaries (a filtering function) and tries to second guess what you're going to type next based on what you've typed in the past.

    IntelliComplete
    Auto-completion software designed to increase your productivity in all Windows applications. Multiple language library support included. They even offer a free typing tutor for those of us who didn't pay attention in school.

    Land Software Customer Pro-File
    An invoicing system designed for freelance interpreters and translators.

    Logos Word ToolBar
    A free utility designed to allow access to Logos language services (dictionary, wordtheque, conjugator and verba volant) directly from a Word document. 

    MetroLanguage Technologies
    Web-based interpreter management and scheduling software, using the web for interactive scheduling and messaging.

    Practicount
    A word and line counting and invoicing program for language professionals, it also includes the ability to count editing time in Word and PowerPoint documents. Practiline Software also offers two utilities: Match Calculator, a free utility (beta version) to helps CAT users calculate counts with multi-tier pricing structure for repetitions and fuzzy matches; and PractiSearch, a utility that will run an Internet search without needing to open a browser window.

    Translation Office Management Software (TOMS)
    Windows software designed to help you keep track of receivables.

    WebBudget
    WebBudget allows you to accurately count all the translatable text in a single Web page or over an entire site.

    Yamada Language Center non-English Font Archive
    A library of downloadable fonts for displaying non-roman characters. Provides a terrific selection of just about any font you could want, from hieroglyphs to Klingon. All fonts are downloadable from the Web and public domain.

    Language Guessers

    All of these sites work on the same idea: feed it a sentence, and it will try to identify the language based on an algorithm. 

    ¿Qué?
    A commercial tool from Alis Technologies that allows you to enter either a text or the URL of a Web site.

    LangWitch
    Demo of a commercial language identifier from MorphoLogic.

    Stochastic Language Identifier
    This system won a language identification "bake-off" within a statistical natural language processing course taken by the author in early 1996. Free source code (TAR file).

    TextCat Language Guesser
    A free demonstration language guesser, scripted in PERL. You can download the source to include in your own application. Includes many links to sites with source code.

    Eidetica
    A commercial guesser that recognizes typical letter combinations of about 70 languages.

    "Automatic" or Machine Translation Engines

    A word of caution: Many machine translation engines try to represent themselves as complete solutions, either by implication or omission. Please be aware that these systems are designed to give a general idea of content for non-native speakers. If you need a translation done for publication or if you're planning to make a decision based on a translation, you should seek out a professional human translator.

    SysTran Translation Software
    URL or plain text. They are also trying to sell their products, including software and human translations. BabelFish is a variation of SysTran found on AltaVista.

    Free Translation
    URL or plain text. Realistic claims about MT. Powered by Transparent Language's Enterprise Translation Server. 

    InterTran
    A free service that neglects to add any disclaimer about the limitations of MT.

    Machine Translation (MT)
    IBM's newest foray into the field. They have a lot of history in this area, and write a very clear description of the technology's possibilities and limitations.
