6,700
languages and 39,000 language names with detailed information on each country, its
population, and languages.
FLEFO
(Foreign Language Forum) The old CompuServe Forum having been killed by CompuServe itself, an
independent forum has been established in its place. There's also a
FLEFO group on Yahoo.
The Human Languages Page A well-organized, extensive list of language-related sites. The author spent a
considerable amount of time combing the Web for language-related sites, providing more
information than could possibly be used in a lifetime.
National Capital Language Resource Center
(NCLRC)
One of nine federally-funded
language resource centers. The mission of the NCLRC is to serve as a
resource to improve the teaching and learning of foreign languages. It
fulfills this function by providing material resources and professional
services that derive from its activities and projects.
The
National Language Conference
A call for action by members of government, academia and the language
industry to make the United States a truly language-competent nation. Papers
and proceedings are articulate and available for download.

A rich publication of interest to translators by translators about translators and
translation. Includes an archive and index.
The Translator's Home Companion The Translator's Home Companion serves as a focal point for translators and the
people who use them. A great starting point, providing a wealth of links to other

WTB Language
Group Article Centre A translation company's white papers include some interesting
client education material as well as articles of interest to translation
companies.
Yahoo
Human Languages The Yahoo Social Sciences site, including some natural language sites. It has a
searchable engine, and even the stuff only vaguely relating to translation is interesting.
American Translators Association
(ATA) ATA certifies translators in specific language pairs (from or into English)
through a three-hour, open book proctored exam given throughout the year in cities around
the country. NOTIS sponsors a workshop in January and an exam sitting in
April. See

National Accreditation
Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI)
NAATI is a national standards body owned by the Commonwealth, State and
Territory Governments of Australia, dedicated to setting and maintaing high
national standards in Translating and Interpreting to enable the existence
of a pool of accredited translators and interpreters responsive to the
changing needs and demography of the Australian culturally and
linguistically diverse society.
Translators and Interpreters Guild
Certification
An outgrowth of the popular referral service, this nationwide labor union for
freelance language professionals has launched a certification program for
translators and interpreters. Applicants must be Guild members in good
standing and pass through a screening process that requires client and peer
references as well as a work sample or other proof of work experience.
Certification status is reviewed by a screening committee every five years.
Washington State DSHSLanguage
Testing and Certification (LTC) LTC certifies medical and social services interpreters in Cambodian, Chinese
(Cantonese and Mandarin), Korean, Lao, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. The process
involves both written and oral tests. An examination manual is available from
LTC to help
candidates prepare for the test.
Internal Revenue
Service (IRS)
Tax information for businesses on a terrific site that almost makes taxes
enjoyable. Download publications and forms. Call your local Taxpayer Education Office for
a schedule of IRS Small Business seminars.

Practices Mailing List
A forum used by translators and interpreters to request references for
potential clients and to respond to those requests. The rules on the forum
(actually two mailing lists) are very strict to maintain a professional image
and ensure that subscribers to the list can count on factual and reliable
information.
The Translation Shop
A Web site that allows translators to post rants and raves about translation
company payment practices (including late payment, disputed word counts, etc.)
They also give the 'victims' a chance to respond.

Office for Civil Rights LEP Guidance
Includes many documents relating to improving services, including the new
"Policy Guidance on the Title VI Prohibition Against National Origin Discrimination as it Affects Persons
with Limited English Proficiency." The first formal policy guidance on this
issue since 1970, this document is the result of over a year of dialogue with
Health and Human Services recipients, beneficiaries and the public regarding the challenges of
extending services to individuals who are limited English proficient (LEP).
Diversity Rx Diversity Rx is a clearing house of information on how to meet the language
and cultural needs of minorities, immigrants, refugees and other diverse
populations seeking health care.

Localization Industry Standards Association
(LISA)
As their name suggests, these heavyweights set the guidelines for the industry.
They have recently published a preliminary set of ethical guidelines
for the industry and are requesting public comment on them.
Localization Resource Center
A very rich site with articles on localization and links to tools for localization. They
have a mailing list if you wish to receive the PDF magazine, or you can download back
issues. You can also become a member of this organization.
MSDN Going Global
Microsoft's localization resource. Includes a handy search engine for the site. The
section on character sets is especially well-presented for people grappling with this
issue.
