    WEBSHOP: Leukemia for Healthcare Interpreters

    An Interactive Webshop

    What is a “webshop”?
      A webshop is just like an interactive onsite class, but held online through Zoom.
    During a webshop, you can ask questions and engage in discussion. You may be divided into “break-out” rooms where you’ll be working with other participants on exercises or on practicing a skill. There may be quizzes and polls. So, while there may be some PowerPoint and lecture, this is not like your typical webinar. Your full attention and participation is expected; that’s what makes it fun!

    What is it about?

    • How and where is our blood made and why is this important for interpreting for leukemia care?
    • What is leukemia and what is its place among other types of cancer?
    • What is a stem cell transplant?
    These and many other questions will be answered at the Leukemia for Healthcare Interpreters workshop.

      This 4-hour webshop will provide an introduction to the process by which blood is created and renewed; the nature of cancer in general; the nature of leukemia and its types; and symptoms, tests, and treatments related to leukemia including stem cell transplantation.

    Participants will also discuss challenges that interpreters face when interpreting in oncology settings, and in particular during appointments related to leukemia, in addition to ways of overcoming them. Participants will be provided with handouts which will include a copy of the PowerPoint Presentation, a glossary, a written practice worksheet, and role-playing exercises. The workshop will be interactive and allow participants to review the material through group activities and oral interpretation practice.

      American Translators Association Certification Exam  - CANCELLED

      NOTIS has been informed that the location where we were scheduled to hold our annual sitting of the ATA exam in July has closed until September 1st due to Covid-19, and has cancelled all space rentals through that date. Given the health concerns and the difficulty of finding rental space during this pandemic, NOTIS must cancel our scheduled ATA exam sitting. We are sorry for any inconvenience this poses to our members and will reassess the situation in August, to see if there is any chance of rescheduling the exam for this coming fall or winter.

      If this is not possible, we will schedule an exam sitting as soon as is safe to do so. If you have concerns regarding your inability to sit for the ATA exam via NOTIS as scheduled in July, please contact Caron Bailey, ATA Certification Program Manager at to discuss other exam opportunities.

      Interpreting for the Injured Worker

      More info and registration will be available soon!

      What is this? The purpose of this six-hour workshop is to help interpreters improve their knowledge of the terminology needed to accurately and successfully interpret for injured workers. This workshop will help healthcare interpreters as well as court interpreters who work in workers’ compensation cases and depositions.

      What you will learn:

      • Types of injures (specific, cumulative, stress-related, etc.);
      • The language of the worker (types of jobs, tasks, tools, machinery, etc.);
      • Comprehensive and detailed description of medical conditions resulting from work injuries: orthopedic (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, back disorders, knee, ankle), chronic pain, mental health disorders;
      • Types of treatment (PT, pain management, medications, psychological, FRP, etc.);
      • Overview of the workers’ compensation system (medical-legal evaluations, parties involved, disability rating, apportionment, C&R, MMI, stipulation, utilization review, etc.);
      • Interpreting in depositions for injured workers;
      • Challenges for interpreters and cultural considerations.

      This will be an interactive and engaging workshop. There will be ample opportunities to review specific vocabulary, scenarios, and practice consecutive interpretation though role-plays and mini-dialogues. Participants will receive glossaries and study materials to practice after the workshop.
