NOTIS’ Community Interpreters Division presents

Healthcare interpreters invest a significant amount of time in learning medical terminology and the ins and outs of the US healthcare system - and rightly so. However, interpreting encounters in healthcare settings are not all dense medical jargon - they involve real people speaking real language, which may include small talk, stories, jokes, idioms, and cultural references. Representation, terminology, and cultural references are unique within the LGBTQ+ Community, which must be accurately and neutrally facilitated by the healthcare interpreter. Not only does the interpreter need to get the right facts, but the right jargon, which is culturally appropriate and respectful, without bias from the interpreter.
This 2-hour class will equip participants with strategies for implementing modern, culturally appropriate, and respectful terminology, as well as strategies for recognizing bias through lecture, examples, and group participation activities. A time for questions & answers will be provided within a safe space for learning in a non-judgmental environment.
At the end of this presentation, participants will:

Produce accurate, modern, and culturally appropriate terminology related to the LGBTQ+ Community

Discuss ways in which to recognize and avoid bias
- Provide examples for future learning
LGBTQ+ (+ stands for IA=intersex and asexual/aromantic/agender) "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (one's sexual or gender identity), intersex, and asexual/aromantic/agender"
An Interactive Webshop
A webshop is just like an interactive onsite class, but held online through Zoom. During a webshop, you can ask questions and engage in discussion. You may be divided into “break-out” rooms where you’ll be working with other participants on exercises or on practicing a skill. There may be quizzes and polls. So, while there may be some PowerPoint and lecture, this is not like your typical webinar. Your full attention and participation are expected; that’s what makes it fun!

Christopher Cardona, a member of the LGBTQ+ Community and owner of C4 Communication ASL Interpreting Service, holds a BA in Business, a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, a PhD in Religion, two certificates in Online Facilitation & Teaching, a Graduate Certificate in American History, and has completed several hours of study at Gallaudet & Georgetown Universities in ASL and Sexuality Studies. Currently, he is completing his MA in American History and his BA in Spanish. Christopher is a full-time professor at Palo Verde College and an instructor at Imperial Valley College, where he teaches ASL, ESL, and American Citizenship.
No refunds can be given after August 1st. A $10 processing fee will apply for refunds requested before August 1st. Contact the NOTIS office manager for cancellation. Transfer of credits to other workshop is not allowed. No refunds will be given for reasons unrelated to this content, such as unstable internet connection, not receiving reminders, or problems with system requirements.
