Conducting a Structured Self-Critique of Your Interpreting Performance

Course Description
This workshop will help you apply principles of deliberate practice to interpreting training in order to boost your ability to self-reflect and improve your performance in dialogue interpreting. Deliberate practice calls for constructive feedback, which is the focus of this webinar. You will learn how to use a rubric and an error categorization system to self-critique recordings of your own interpretations, all using a practice dialogue from Terp (https://terp.app), an online platform for intuitive and rewarding interpreting training.

First, you will learn the basics of deliberate practice. Then you will learn how rubrics and error categories can aid your efforts to self-critique your performance. Next, you will conduct a practice session on Terp, recording all your interpretations, after which you will listen to your recordings and critique your own performance in a detailed way using error categories and then holistically using a rubric. Finally, you will repeat the process and reflect on how you can incorporate deliberate practice into your personal interpreting training regimen.

Devin Gilbert is a translation/interpreting practitioner, educator, and researcher. He teaches Spanish Translation and Interpreting as an Assistant Professor at Utah Valley University’s (UVU) Department of Languages & Cultures, having undertaken his training at Wake Forest University’s Master’s in Interpreting and Translation Studies program and Kent State University’s PhD in Translation Studies program. Devin is also a board member of the Utah Translators and Interpreters Association (UTIA) and is a certified healthcare interpreter and educational interpreter for Spanish. In 2022, he started developing Terp, a web-based interpreting training platform that seeks to make quality, authentic interpreting practice dialogues more accessible and interactive.

Please allow time to log in early. Late arrivals are welcome to stay, but will not receive DSHS credit. 

IMPORTANT: Participants are required to have their cameras turned on for the entire time and show themselves so we can verify their attendance and issue them a certificate. This is a DSHS requirement. 

Refund Policy
✅ Refunds are available if requested more than 5 days before the event, minus a $15 fee.
❌ No refunds for cancellations after that period or due to technical issues, missed reminders, or platform compatibility problems.
❌ Transfers between workshops are not permitted.
