Interpreter Skill Building: Notetaking and Sight Translation presented by NOTIS and Tacoma General Hospital / Multicare

Jackson Hall, Tacoma General Hospital, 314 Martin Luther King Junior Way, Tacoma, WA

4 CE credits from ATA, WA DSHS , and WA AOC (Professional Category)

This workshop is actually two workshops in one, each addressing a key skill in medical interpreting. The first 2-hour session will deal with note-taking, while the second will address sight translation.
  • Note-taking is an integral part of medical interpreting. It allows interpreters to listen more actively, enhance their accuracy, and reduce the number of interruptions they make of patients and providers. In this workshop, we will look at how interpreting performance is improved through note-taking and have many opportunities to practice and grow in this area.
  • Sight translation is another fundamental skill for medical interpreters. It is often taken for granted that an interpreter has the expertise to sight translate, even though this skill is unique. In this workshop, we will look at the necessary steps to render a professional sight translation, consider some of the more common pit-falls, and have the opportunity to use some practice tools to improve our sight translation skills through group discussion and individual practice.
