Vicarious Trauma: Can we truly separate ourselves from what we are interpreting?

Course Description: Faced with interpreting detailed acts of violence, particularly in cases involving domestic violence and sexual assault, we often relive the trauma experienced by the victim.  Most often, interpreters are not aware to what extent or that they may be experiencing vicarious trauma. Hence, how can we prepare ourselves to interpret for such victims?  How can we better address vicarious trauma so we can continue to be of service in this kind of work? This webinar will assist participants in identifying symptoms as well as put into practice a variety of self-care strategies for managing vicarious trauma.

When: Attend live on Saturday, May 13, 10am-11am PT; and/or watch the recording up to 45 days after the live event.

About the Instructor:
Isabel Framer is the founder and principal partner of Language Access Consultants, LLC.  Ms. Framer has worked as a consultant to defense attorneys, prosecutors, law enforcement, state and federal government agencies, and advocacy firms on language access for Limited English Proficient persons in the legal system.  She is a state court-certified judiciary interpreter and has been qualified as an expert witness in court proceedings regarding language access and interpreter standards. On November, 2010 she was appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the US Senate to serve as a member of the Board of Directors to the State Justice Institute.  Ms. Framer is also a lead consultant for the Asian and Pacific Islander Institute on Gender Based Violence, helping to train attorneys and advocates on interpretation issues for domestic violence victims.
