The Art of Translation
Wednesday, January 15, 2:00pm

Local Russian translator and NOTIS member Veronica Muskheli will discuss the art of translation by presenting a close reading workshop working with multiple translations of short passages from three stories of Anton Chekhov, Anna on the Neck, The Student, and The Lady With the Little Dog. These stories will be sent digitally to participants.

Veronica will address such issues as accuracy in translation, the types of decisions translators grapple with, and the questionability of ‘best translation notions’.

Participants will gain a better understanding of the skill involved in bringing these courageous and imaginative voices of the literary world to English language readers. Folio members and translators are encouraged to participate, especially those participating in Folio’s Winter Reading Challenge of Translated Literature.

Born and raised in Russia, Veronica Muskheli is now a doctoral student in the Slavic Languages and Literatures Department at the University of Washington. After many years of working as a biologist at the UW, Veronica yielded to her other love—humanities—and went back to graduate school to study literature and translation. Currently she is writing her dissertation on mothers and daughters in Russian folklore and contemporary literature.
