NOTIS’ Translation Division presents

Reframing our relationship to MT: the future of human translation in a globalized world

Presented by Mary McKee

Free for NOTIS members! Watch the recording and earn CEU.

Event Description:
The tension between human translators and MT engines has increased in recent years, with each side trying to prove their superiority over the other. Human translators increasingly take to social media to vent their fears, frustrations, and assertions that human translation is better and always the answer to any client's translation needs, while scrappy MT startups tout the speed and ease with which they can solve any translation problem with opaque and complex algorithms. This leads to conflict and fighting over jobs as neither player really understands the role of the others in the industry. Mary will draw on her decade of experience as a freelancer working with large LSPs and individual clients and her experience as a project manager in the MT and human translation areas to build a better picture of the worldwide translation industry. Participants will work together to brainstorm steps they can take to protect their careers and expand the services they offer in order to work with, not against, MT.

Learning Objective:

  • Locate the human translator within the larger language industry
  • Identify use cases for human translation versus MT from a client's point of view
  • Understand the global market for translation, its growth potential, and the market forces at work
  • Build an actionable list of steps to protect and expand your career as a human translator in light of the future of MT
