NOTIS’ Community Interpreters Division presents

Virology for Healthcare Interpreters

Presented by Yuliya Speroff

What is it about?
In light of the global pandemic, viruses have been in the news and on our mind. This workshop aims to improve interpreters’ understanding of basic concepts and bilingual terminology around virology, leading to more accurate interpretation and better patient-provider communication in appointments related to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases caused by viruses - from measles to HIV to COVID-19.

On completion of this 3-hour workshop, interpreters will have gained an understanding of viruses as microbes, including the structure of viruses, how viruses replicate, spread and mutate; the basic understanding of how our immune system works and how vaccination can protect us against diseases caused by viruses. Participants will also discuss interpreting challenges common for encounters related to viral diseases and develop strategies on overcoming these challenges. In addition, participants will engage in practice exercises and interpreting role-play in order to put their new knowledge to practice.

An Interactive Webshop

A webshop is just like an interactive onsite class, but held online through Zoom. During a webshop, you can ask questions and engage in discussion. You may be divided into “break-out” rooms where you’ll be working with other participants on exercises or on practicing a skill. There may be quizzes and polls. So, while there may be some PowerPoint and lecture, this is not like your typical webinar. Your full attention and participation are expected; that’s what makes it fun!
