NOTIS’s Community Interpreters Division (CID) presents:

Interpreting for IEPs and Beyond: The Role of Social Service Interpreters in Schools
Presented by Fanny Cordero

SOLD OUT – REGISTRATION CLOSED

What is it about?
IEP, SDI, PWN, BASC, SBA, LRE, SLD, CELF, ELA, TEXL, IDEA, FAPE…. These are some of the acronyms that are commonly used when interpreting for IEP meetings in public schools. Just as in medical interpreting, interpreting for education encounters requires that interpreters invest some time learning terminology used in Special Education IEP meetings in public schools for grades K-12.

This two-hour interactive class will introduce participants to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and address spoken language interpretation for IEP meetings in public school grades K-12.

Objectives for this class:

  1. Introduction to IEP and the IEP Timeline
  2. Overview of what happens at IEP meetings
  3. Exploration of interpretation strategies and challenges in this area, plus practice with provided scripts in breakout groups
  4. Presentation of a list of suggested resources for preparation and continued study
